Inaugural Lecture of Prof. Dr. Tomás Halík, Honorary Professor of the LSRS.
A Response will be given by Card. Grzegorz Ryś.
Secularization has not destroyed religion but transformed it. In the age of late modernity Christianity was understood as a “world view.” “Catholicism” emerged as a closed system in opposition to modern culture and society.
The Second Vatican Council took a significant step in the transition from “Catholicism” to catholicity, universality, ecumenicity, but the openness to modernity came at a time when modernity was just ending.
Now there is another radical transformation of civilization. The answer to the paradigm shift may be “synodality.” Religion can be understood as re-lecture (religio as re-legere), a new hermeneutic of “signs of the times.” It requires the art of spiritual discernment, a contemplative approach to reality.
