Katja Soennecken studied Classical Archaeology, Protestant Theology and Jewish Studies in Heidelberg, Berlin, Edinburgh, Münster and Wuppertal; she wrote her PhD thesis in Biblical Archaeology on the topic „Kulturelle Umbrüche in der südlichen Levante. Der Übergang von der Bronze- zur Eisenzeit unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Tall Zirāʿa." In spring 2020, she completed her theological education with the Second Theological Exam and is a pastor in probationary service at the Protestant Church in the Rhineland (on leave). Currently, she works as Assistant Director at the German Protestant Institute of Archaeology in Jerusalem and is conduction research to complete her Habilitation. She has also been invited to lecture at the School of Jewish Theology of the University of Potsdam.

  • Diverse excavation experience in Israel and Jordan – on Tall aṣ-Ṣāfī/Gath, in Ramat Rahel (assistant area supervisor), in the excavations on Tall Zirāʿa (area supervisor) as well as the surrounding survey in the Wādī al-ʿArab (co-director), under the Church of the Redeemer as well as on Mount Zion (section director; co-director) in Jerusalem and will co-direct the excavations in Tiberias from spring 2022 (together with the Hebrew University).
  • Habilitation project: "Sea Peoples" in the Jordan Valley and Transjordan – Material Culture, Cult and Political Power Beyond the Pentapolis.
